![]() ![]() He was the last surviving land tortoise from Pinta Island, one of the northern islands in the Galápagos. The experts believed that mid 20th Century saw the majority of the tortoises in Pinta Island wiped out because of excessive hunting, and had become extinct until they found a lone male that, over a period of time would acquire the name “ Lonesome George” and become world famous. On June 24, 2012, the world-famous giant tortoise affectionately known as Lonesome George passed away. donfaustoi was classified as part of another subspecies, Chelonoidis porteri. A prison colony was set up on the islands and further stocks of tortoises were taken. The subspecies was described by Albert Günther in 1877 after specimens arrived in London. Then successive waves of pirates used them as a source of food. The Pinta Island tortoise, also known as the Pinta giant tortoise, Abingdon Island tortoise, or Abingdon Island giant tortoise, was a subspecies of Galápagos tortoise native to Ecuadors Pinta Island. ![]() First the Spanish sailors caught them and ate them.
